Week 5

Strategy Statement

I plan on showing my state of decay for the rudin house as a story about a man with an  island for himself where he has built his childhood dream home this reference to the rudin house looking like a child's drawn house. I'm taking in mind  the fact that my island is a tropical island there is not much decay that can occur to the building probably change in color to the concrete so i have decided to also add a natural disaster to which will be a tsunami this will cause bits and pieces of the building to break away.

Week 4

5 Movie Trailers that make reference to EXP02

King Kong

Shows an Lifeless island that seems to merely exist come to life showing us some great graphic and suspense in the island.

Wall-e

The trailer shows great examples of how we can show human existence and how decay could occur to some of the things humans had.

2012

shows great examples of destruction to the earth and its infrastructure, allows us to kind of see how natural disasters occur and the way they destroy the surroundings.

War of the Worlds

The trailer has great suspense builds up to the problem really well makes you want to keep watching. The trailer and movie also show great examples of how things break apart for example the bridge in the trailer.

Life After People

This trailer is the best example that describes what we are trying to achieve in our experiments shows decay over time after human existance and what happens to everything when we all banish.

Week 3

Three Referenced Images for Decay

Rudin House Sketches

Natural Disasters

Tsunami

A tsunami is a series of ocean waves with very long wavelengths (typically hundreds of kilometres) caused by large-scale disturbances of the ocean, such as:
  • earthquakes
  • landslide
  • volcanic eruptions
  • explosions
  • meteorites
Below are some images of  the destruction tsunamis leaves behind:

Earthquakes

An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the Earth's surface caused by rock breakage deep within the Earth. This is the result of stresses that have built up within the Earth's brittle crust.

Below are some images of  the destruction Earthquakes leaves behind:

Week 2

Three Materials Research

Concrete

Process of making the material: Concrete is a hardened building material created by combining sand, gravel, or crushed stone, a binder , chemical additives, and water.

How long will it last: Concrete is said to last 50-75 years if produced correctly and kept in its natural state.

What makes them corrode: Its is possible for corrosion to occur around the steel that is in the concrete.

Structural pros: Long life span, fire resistant, hard to break or be damaged (depending on impact).

Structural cons: Can be very damaging in natural disasters example earthquakes.

What they are typically used for: Concrete is widely used for making architectural structuresfoundations, brick/block walls, pavements, bridges/overpasses, motorways/roads, runways, parking structures, dams, pools/reservoirs, pipes, footings for gates, fences and poles and even boats.

Environmental impacts: The cement industry is one of two primary producers of carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas.

Glass

Process of making the material: Glass is a made by melting a mixture of sand and other minerals in a furnace at temperatures of 1700 degrees Celsius.

How long will it last: Glass is said to last for a very long time many sites are specific saying millions of years others say ones life span normally depends on the way the glass is made and the type of chemicals put in it.

What makes them corrode: Glass will corrode only due hot water.

Structural pros: Long life span, fire resistant.

Structural cons:Easily breakable, can start fires, can be very harmful to humans and even animals in the environment

What they are typically used for: Bottles, windows, fish tanks mirrors, strong glass and build a range of structures, sometimes used as decoration example stain glass for churches.

Environmental impacts: Can be harmful to the environment, it is a recyclable material, can cause fires letting off greenhouse gases.

Wood

Process of making the material: Wood is a hard, fibrous tissue found in many trees.

How long will it last: As long as there are no termites eating through it wood should last hundereds of years.

What makes them corrode: If there is any nails or steel in the wood then there will be slight corrosion there.

Structural pros:Wood is lightweight, so it’s pretty easy to work with

Structural cons:Termites love to destroy it. So wood has to be chemically treated to resist the pests. In addition, wood can expand and contract, or even warp and twist, in extreme weather. And it can develop problems with mold.

What they are typically used for:Used to make furniture, musical instruments can be used as fuel, used to build many structures, it could also be used to make rayon fabric from its fibres.

Environmental impacts: Causes deforestation, produces carbon dioxide and lets off greenhouse gases.

Week 1 Experiment 2

 House at Bordeaux

The House at Bordeaux is a simple and complex house at the same time. It consists of three levels the bottom floor built into the ground middle floor is transparent mainly glass and the third is split into several rooms. The house is kind of ironic as it was built for a disabled person and while it looks as though disabled people wont be able to move around in it, they actually can because of the design and technology in the house.

 Rudin House

The Rudin House looks like a typical kind of house. It is a basic house that many would of thought of when they were little or draw a rectangular prism with a roof and basic windows and doors. The house is a mix between the past and present although it look like an old fashioned house with and attic and chimney it is also very modern with a bathroom that is a vertical cross-section.

Barcelona Pavillion

The Barcelona Pavilion is another simple building. It has a range of extravagant materials such as marble, red onyx and travertine. The building was not a home as such but it was mainly used for exhibitions because is was such a wide open space.
